This chapter describes various features on the CommuniGate System not covered in other chapters.
Using Several Accounts from one Workstation
You enter your account name using the standard Link As dialog box when you connect to the Communigate Server. If you know the password, you can enter any name registered with the Server to open that account from any workstation. It is useful when several users share the same workstation, or if you want to scan your mail from somebody else's desktop.
If you are connecting to the server from the same computer the server runs on, you will not see
the "Link As" dialog box: the MacOS does not provide protection for non-network connections. You can use the "Connect As…" command from the File menu to change the user name.
For each account open, the CommuniGator application creates a "Mail for account name" folder inside the CommuniGator application folder. Each folder contains the Preferences files with options set by the user of that account, and it also contains folders for local mailboxes created by that user.
If you switch accounts rather often, you can avoid typing a user name each time you connect to the server. Let's say the mail accounts USER1, USER2, USER3 are used from the same workstation. You should:
• Start the CommuniGator application and connect to the server as user USER1, then you should quit the CommuniGator application. Find the "CommuniGator Prefs" file in the Prefernces folder inside the system folder. Copy that file on desktop, and rename it to USER1.
• Start CommuniGator again and repeat the same procedure for accounts USER2 and USER3.
Now, you may just double-click the "USER1" file icon to connect as USER1, double-click the "USER2" file icon to connect as USER2, etc. Or you may want to put these files into the Apple Menu Items folder to switch the accounts by just selecting the proper item in the Apple menu.
Configuring Notification Options
When a new message arrives, the CommuniGator application can notify you. It can play a sound, it can put a blinking mailbox icon into the applications menu, it can show a notification alert on your screen, and it can automatcially open your In Box.
Choose Options from the Edit menu and Select the Notification icon.
If your computer can record sounds, you can click the Custom buttom. The standard Sound Input dialog box appears and allows you to record the sound to be played as the new mail notification.
Configuring CommuniGate Notifier
If the CommuniGate Notifier is installed on your computer you can be notified about new incoming mail even when the CommuniGaotr application is not running.
To tune the Notifier, you can launch the CommuniGator application and choose Notifier Settings from the Edit menu.
The Notify in CommuniGator way option makes Notifier to use sound, icon and/or alert notifications as set in the Notification settings in the CommuniGator application.
The Launch CommuniGator option is selected, the Notifier launches the CommuniGator application when the CommuniGate Server receives a new message for you. Additional settings allow you to choose how the CommuniGator application is launched: in foreground or in background. You can also make the Notifier check if your computer was idle for some period of time (i.e. you were out of your desk). If the idle period is longer than the time you set, the CommuniGator application is not launched.
